Snowflake Matching & Mitten Matching: Winter Visual Discrimination Games

By Karen Cox | Affiliate Disclosure | Filed Under: Winter Theme

Here are four Winter printable games: Snowflake Matching Cards, Snowflake Same and Different, Mitten Matching Cards, and Mitten Same and Different.

Winter Visual Discrimination Activities

These Winter games practice visual discrimination skills in preschool, pre-k, and kindergarten. Visual discrimination skills are so important for young children because it helps them to be able to identify letters and numbers. Visual discrimination helps children distinguish between similar letter shapes such as p, q, b, d, as well as similar numbers and shapes.

These are free downloadable printables.

Snowflake Matching Cards

Snowflake Matching Cards Printable: Winter Visual Discrimination Skills for Pre-K, Preschool

Prepare the Set

To prepare this set, print onto card stock paper (see download button), and laminate if desired. There are two mats in the set and a set of cards. Cut the cards apart. The mats can be used as they are, or you can glue them onto a file folder to make a file folder game. You might wish to add Velcro so kids can Velcro the pieces in the correct spot.

What to Do

Children will choose a snowflake card from the stack, and look on the mat to find it’s match. They will place the snowflake card in the square by the snowflake’s match.

Snowflake Same and Different Game

Snowflake Same & Different Printable: Winter Visual Discrimination Skills for Pre-K, Preschool

Prepare the Set

To prepare this set, print the cards onto card stock paper (see download button), and laminate if desired. Cut the cards apart: there are four cards per sheet. I recommend cutting the cards apart, because leaving all of them on one mat would be visually confusing for children.

What to Do

Each card has four pictures: 3 pictures are the same and 1 picture is different. Children will choose a card and carefully look at each picture. They will find the picture that is different and mark it with a manipulative. The cards have varying levels of difficulty. For beginners, start with the cards on the first page.

There are lots of options for manipulatives to use for marking the answer on the cards.

Manipulatives to use:

  • Clothespins
  • Plastic chips
  • Unifix cubes
  • Marker caps
  • Table scatter
  • Mini erasers
  • Flat floral marbles

I used your gingerbread visual discrimination cards in December; they worked great. I just printed off the mittens and snowflakes for visual discrimination. I am glad that you have varying degrees of difficulty, because all of the children are not at the same level. The snowflakes look fabulous, real brain strains. I am excited to try them.
    Blessings upon you.
