This set of school picture-word cards includes 18 school related words: apple, bus, book, chair, crayons, glue, paint, scissors, paper, pencil, eraser, ruler, back pack, lunchbox, school, globe, notebook, chalkboard.
There are more sets in the Picture-Word Cards collection. This set is great to use at the beginning of the school year.
How to use the cards in the classroom:
You can place the picture-word cards in a pocket chart near the writing center. Encourage kids to take them out of the pocket chart and take them to the table if they want to copy the words on their paper. The children return the card back to the pocket chart when they are finished. They can also use the cards to spell words with magnetic letters or letter tiles.
More ideas for using these cards:
- Hook them together on a binder ring to make a picture dictionary.
- Use them on a word wall.
- Use the blank set to write words in other languages or other writing styles (e.g. D’Nealian), or use them for modeled writing activities.
Pocket Chart or Ring Cards:
These cards have a dot in the upper left hand corner of each card. You can punch a hole in that dot and hook the cards together on a metal binder ring. (You could also leave the hole unpunched and use these in a pocket chart.)

And yet another super help from you, Karen! Thank you so very much for sharing the hundreds of ideas you do. Being back in the classroom after many. many, many years has been a challenge in many ways because teaching is done in a very different way now. There has been so much to learn so I can give the best to the children – and you have been my most important teacher. This past year has been my first back, and not a theme has gone by that I have not used your knowledge, ideas, tips and resources. I am so hugely grateful for you and all you share. Are the small cards still available somewhere? They fit perfectly in an index box and I keep them in my writing center.
They are no longer online, but send me an email with the sets you want & I’ll send them to you. My email is karen@prekinders.com.
