Measuring Ribbons

By Karen Cox | Affiliate Disclosure | Filed Under: Sizes & Measuring

In this activity, children measure different lengths of ribbons with Unifix cubes (non-standard measurement).

Measuring with Ribbons: Preschool Math

You Will Need:

  • Unifix cubes
  • colorful ribbon (grosgrain works well)
  • Ribbon Sizes Mat

Preparation

Prepare the activity by cutting the ribbon into different lengths. One ribbon should be the same length as two Unifix cubes. The next ribbon should be the same length as three cubes, then 4, 5, 6, and on up through the length of 10 cubes. You should have ribbons for numbers 2-10. Make sure they exactly match the length of the Unifix cubes hooked together.

Measuring Practice

Children will hook the Unifix cubes together to measure the length of each ribbon, count how many cubes long the ribbon is, and place the ribbon on a mat next to that number.
