Forest Fine Motor: Find the Wooden Acorns

Fill a bin with colorful pom poms and mix in some wooden acorns. Children can use tongs to pick out the wooden acorns and place them in small bowls. These acorns came with the little wooden bowls. These can be painted or stained, but I kind of like the natural wood color.

Tip: Wooden acorns can be found in craft stores with the Fall decor.

Pinecones Fine Motor with Tongs

Encourage children to use tongs to pick up mini pinecones and transfer them between bowls. Or, have them place a pinecone in each well of a paint palette tray. This activity helps strengthen those little hand muscles while they enjoy working with natural materials.

Tip: You can pick up inexpensive paint palettes at a dollar store and find mini pinecones in the fall decor section at a craft store.

Forest Fine Motor: Leaf Table Scatter

Add some tongs and leaf shaped table scatter. For fine motor fun, have children pick up the leaves with tongs and move them to a paint tray.

Leaf Fine Motor

Give children an added sorting challenge with the leaf-shaped table scatter. Children can use tongs to transfer the leaves to little bowls, while sorting them by color. These little bowls are plastic and were found in a discount store.

Leaf Sorting Fine Motor

You can also make it a counting activity by setting out number cards and having them count out the correct amount of leaves, using the tongs to place them by the numbers.

Forest Fine Motor: Stickers & Storytelling

Peeling stickers might seem simple, but it’s fantastic fine motor work! Provide forest-themed or leaf-shaped stickers and let them peel and stick onto paper. Encourage them to draw trees, animals, and other forest elements to create their own story. Have them dictate a story about their forest scene.

Tip: Look for forest or leaf stickers to match the theme. You can use regular stickers or foamie stickers.

Leaf Tracing

Tracing is a classic fine motor activity, and with forest-themed stencils, it becomes a fun seasonal challenge. Provide leaf stencils (or other forest-themed stencils), and let children trace and decorate their leaves, practicing hand control and creativity.

Tip: This wooden leaf was found in a package at the dollar store. You can also find plastic seasonal and themed stencils at craft stores. Or, make your own stencil by cutting shapes from plastic folders.
