To prepare, print the play dough mats on cardstock. You can either slip them in a clear page protector or laminate. Hook them together using metal binder rings like a flip book. Hooking them together keeps them from getting scattered during center time, and they are easy to separate if you want to use them at small group.

Each math mat says “Add [#] drops of water to put out the fire.” Children will identify the numeral and count out the correct amount of water drops to place on the burning house.

To make the water drops, have children tear off small pieces of blue or white play dough.

As an alternative to play dough, you can use clear or blue glass floral flat marbles as a counting manipulative.

The toddler mat says “Add drops of water to put out the fire.” There are no numbers on the toddler mat for younger children who only need fine motor practice.

For numbers higher than 10, print the toddler mat and tell children how many to count.
